Description
We're opening our summer exhibition, Force Field, and scooping free cups of Humphry Slocombe!Force Field is a window to the Megarealms of Maxwell Holyoke-Hirsch. Maxwell channels inspiration from the visions and events around him, responding in graphite, ink, carvings, pixel, spray, and paint; freely crafting these autobiographical moments into refined narratives. This process has led the artist to perceive each new piece as part of a life-long narrative rather than units particular to a specific body of work.
Force Field is a rare perspective into the canvas paintings from the artist's San Francisco period. Having arrived in San Francisco an ink-and-pen craftsman, it was here that Maxwell began experimenting with larger, more colourful renderings and more complex storytelling. Canvas provided a gateway into further experimentation, propelling Maxwell's art and illustration toward its robust dynamism, as it exists today. Balancing loose cohesion with tight application, Maxwell's canvas work conveys an evolving narrative between the everyday and the fantastical, folding time and activating connections across his career.
Maxwell has exhibited around the world and has illustrated for a range of clients including Fantagraphics books, Virgin Records, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Maxwell currently lives and works in New York City.
