Description
"First Friday" at Foundry Commons (Bloc5, a new developing art district of Downtown San Jose)Foundry Commons and the Paolo Mejia Fine Art and Design cordially invites everyone to attend our group art show this First Friday in October. This group art exhibition are organized by six Citadel community artists of San Jose with the collaboration of Foundry Commons and Paolo Mejia Fine Art and Design. The group show will exhibit the multi-faceted creative processes of these local visual artists. Guest artists’ work on display will show various medium such as work on paper, canvas, ceramics and wood. Their work will exemplify their craftsmanship, skills and concepts in their discipline.
These six visual artists would like to share their creative processes to the community. Agnes Caulfield's work explores the beauty of nature through her landscape paintings. Her plein air paintings are lusciously colored and captures the beauty of California and the natural state of her scenic travels. Stephen Tull's work explores the dimensionality and tactility of ceramic medium. He makes pottery and sculptural forms. In his pottery, he captures the beauty of forms and the richness of the unexpected glaze colors, and his ceramic sculptures are sometimes whimsical and comical, capturing the state of humility and bravado of life. Ruthie Yamada's work in visual poetry is created organically using collaged cut words and vintage fashion images from her previous career as a fashion designer. Her poems are formed and inspired by humor, spirituality and love. Jon Kwak's work depicts his conceptual experimentation in 2D and 3D forms with the influence of Dadaist masters. He uses found objects and assembles them to create a simplified visual effect, sometimes more complex than a complicated and intricate design, which expresses his concept to form. Willy Baet's work explores the tradition of fine arts. Hailing from an architecture and muralist background, he constantly experiments with materials and processes. With this background and technical know-how, he incorporates his Renaissance masters' style in his work. Willy constantly challenges himself to better his crafts, and to express his plethora of ideas into something tangible. And lastly, Paolo Mejia is a multi-disciplinarian visual artist that explores materials, processes and concepts in 2D and 3D form. His conceptual work and ouvre explores the materials being used, and applies the foundation and elements of traditional art within his processes. With his design background, he creates something ephemeral, yet tangible visual work.
These artists have joined together to activate and rejuvenate the once thriving art community/area of the cannery district of downtown San Jose, west of 280 and SJSU. They are attempting to create a stepping-stone for future artistic endeavors and proliferate the art culture in a technologically driven city. We invite you to come pass by our exhibit this October through November. Meet and greet our guest artists at the opening reception, see a dynamic and diverse collection of art, and start collecting their work.
