Dwarf rhododendrons are found in the northern regions of our planets, and above the tree line. A dwarf rhododendron, Rhododendron lapponicum, is found in Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, northern Russia, Alaska, Canada; and Wisconsin and the northeastern states of the United States.

Mike Stewart went on Rhododendron Species Foundation trips to Sikkim, Eastern Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, eastern Canada, and Alaska to photograph dwarf and other rhododendrons.
Since dwarf rhododendron species generally grow above the tree line, in growing them it is best to duplicate their environment. The nurseryman Allan Korth successfully grew dwarf rhododendron species in track fines, which is decomposed granite.
