Description
On March 1, Loakal will open our latest exhibition, “Last Rites,” a solo show by Bay Area street art collective FilthGrime. Reveling in dark, apocalyptic imagery, FilthGrime examines the underbelly of society through the eyes of a subculture they call the Street Cult. Featuring all new mixedmedia artworks and installations, “Last Rites” presents a look into a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world that reflects the politics and social ills of the one we currently find ourselves in.“This exhibition is a post-mortem preview of where the world may end up, nay, has ended up, in the many places where those who can do something to help have instead locked themselves up in high-rise buildings and private jets,” explain the artists. “All the piss that has been cast from on high has come filtering down through humanity to end up as this exhibition. It's a look at ourselves from our worst angle, a good smell of those parts that never get washed.”
FilthGrime create bold, graphic compositions rooted in propaganda posters, punk and metal album art and horror films alike. They challenge their viewers to think critically about social inequality and politics by confronting them with a dark, twisted reflection of the human race's demise.
Please join us for the opening reception on March 1, 6-10 pm at Loakal, 550 2nd St, Oakland. The exhibition will be on view March 1- March 31 and is free and open to the public.
Founded in 2009, FilthGrime is an artist collective with a combined 30 years of graffiti, painting, sculpture and performance experience. Acting as a media channel for the shadow-side of the collective unconscious, we take society's ignored, avoided, and hidden fears and put them boldly back in your face as our own brand of Doomsday propaganda.
Sometimes humorous, often macabre, with a paint brush or spray can, we portray the darker elements of our shadow … along with those even darker elements of the ego. We paint from the perspective of a shadow element—indulging it, glorifying it, and seeing the world through its eyes.
Featuring collabs with Eddie Colla, D young V, Burn 353 and more to be announced.
