Description

Join the Institute of Urban Homesteading at its 2012 kick-off event in collaboration with the Ecology Center and the originator of the local Fiber Movement, Rebecca Burgess. Now that we are starting to source food closer to home, what are the next steps we can take towards localization and right relationship with our planet? We all have a sense that something is wrong when we read the labels on our clothes. We know that many of these clothes are produced at a great embedded cost to the environment and the people who make them. But how can we cloth ourselves when there are so few alternatives? Author Rebecca Burgess asked herself this very same question. What started as a one-year-challenge to dress completely in clothes whose fibers and dye plants had been sourced from within 150 miles of her West Marin home, has become a nationwide movement that poses the question "What is the landscape that clothes us?" Come learn about local pastures, fields of organic cotton, native dye plants and urban design studios that are collaborating to re-localize the literal fabric of our lives. Learn how small scale textile production can be used to restore both our local ecology and our local economy. Rebecca Burgess, author of "Harvesting Color" will show slides and talk about her journey. We'll also have a number of other fiber artists on hand to show their wares and talk about what they will be teaching.
