Oakland, California – Oakland based indie rockers Felsen , who’s newly- released 2nd full length album, Breaking Up With Loneliness, will be performing Friday March 2 at the Hotel Utah Saloon in San Francisco. The album’s producer, Jonathan “JP” Parker (who has worked with Wilco, the Fray, Andrew Bird, the Redwalls, and Liz Phair), said, “the new songs may very well be the best batch of raw songs that I have encountered since Wilco's Summerteeth (period)”. Felsen performs at 10 to 11.15 pm and there is a $10 cover charge.
Frontman Andrew Griffin started Felsen after his cancer 2006 diagnosis. Less than five months after his diagnosis, Griffin's first and only child was born. As he balanced the responsibilities of fatherhood with ongoing cancer treatment, Griffin turned to songwriting as a coping strategy, which led to the release of Felsen's first album, Accidental Drowning in 2009. Felsen Loves You, an EP on the Ninth Street Opus label, followed in 2010.
“It's not all introspective, serious music,” says Griffin. “Felsen knows how to rock and we have a lot of fun with our songs and onstage, but what I’m doing now is so much better than before. I feel like I’ve found that clear pathway to genuine emotion, and not to be afraid of that stuff. It’s more meaningful. Whatever I’m doing now, I’ve got more at stake. And I think people respond to that emotionally .”
Griffin wrote the title track, “Breaking Up With Loneliness,” about his young son. The somber, personal tone of that track is balanced by the Casio-infused pop whimsy of BFF OMG and the sugar-coated social commentary of tunes like Oscar Grant (named for the man shot by Bay Area Rapid Transit Police on New Year's Eve, 2009) and The Secret Life of Guns. Felsen is known for being able to engage even distant audiences through Griffin's dry humor and stage antics, and frequent “visitations” from a giant dancing bunny.
“Marvelously witty pop”, East Bay Express
“This is music full of originality while staying rooted in some of the best of classic rock.” seaoftranquility.org
“Witty lyrics, solid hooks, and great production are all here.” rockandrollsuperstar.com
“Breaking Up With Loneliness is an instant classic, presenting a non-stop string of smart and memorable songs...almost all of which sound like hits you've never heard before. “ babysue.com
Felsen (Griffin-vocals and guitar, Dominic Henri-bass and vocals, Justus Dobrin-keyboards, and Art McConnell-drums) were joined in the studio by legendary drummer Michael Urbano (Smashmouth, 3rd Eye Blind, Sheryl Crow, Cracker, CAKE) and slide guitar virtuoso Johnny Vernazza (Elvin Bishop, Norton Buffalo, Marshall Tucker Band, Van Morrison). The album, mixed by Chris Brickley (Wilco, Smashing Pumpkins, Mary J. Blige ) is the culmination of two years of constant performing, touring, wood-shedding and songwriting. On stage, Felsen has recently been joined by guitarist Jonathan Devoto (of Bird By Bird and formerly of the Matches).
Breaking Up With Loneliness was 100% funded by Felsen’s fans through Kickstarter.
