Description

PHOTO is hosting a unique opportunity to meet the artists and to take home original prints. Please join us for an intimate look at the portfolios of five photographers.

The artists are Jay Tyrrell, Charles Anselmo, Yelena Zhavoronkova, Jerome Szymczak, and Fletcher Oakes. Their work encompasses many genres and techniques.

Artist Biographies:

Charles Anselmo lives in Redwood City and has led over 20 photographic excursions to Cuba. He has exhibited his work at numerous venues over the past 10 years including a solo show at PHOTO in 2011. He has also curated exhibits and given presentations about Cuban photographic artists at: Exposure Gallery, New Haven, CT (2007); Insight Images, Emerald Hills, CA (2008); Instituto Internacional de Periodismo Jose Marti, Havana (2008); Avenue 25 Gallery, San Mateo, CA (2010); Dalet Gallery, Philadelphia, PA (2010); Lake Wales Art Center, Lake Wales, Florida (2010).

Fletcher Oakes lives in Richmond and has been a working artist for over 50 years. He has concentrated on digital art and photography since receiving his Master’s degree in 2000 from Cal State East Bay. He teaches digital art at Diablo Valley College, works as a professional photographer, and has shown in venues on the West Coast including the Richmond Art Center. He currently has work at the Rosie the Riveter National Historical Park Visitor Center, Point Richmond.

Jerome Szymczak (“Shimchak”) is a self-taught photographer and travel writer based in Alameda. His digital portraits and stills from travels around the world have appeared in the National Geographic Traveler and the Athenian Magazine. He is currently working with black-and-white darkroom prints “for a more tangible, contemplative result . . .”

Jay Tyrrell is an East Bay artist who has been a photographer all his life. His e-book "Wind Army: A Homage to War of the Worlds " won the Independent Publishers gold medal for outstanding achievement in e-books for 2012, and the DCFoto award for e-book journalism in 2012. He is part of the collections of Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Art Houston as well as many private collections.

Yelena Zhavoronkova grew up in the former Soviet Union and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Industry. Now in San Francisco, she is a member of 81 Bees Collective, exhibiting at the de Young Museum, RayKo Photo Center, Harvey Milk Photo Center, Photobooth, Dickerman Prints, and ARC Studios. Her work has been featured in solo shows at CCSF Camera Obscura Gallery, UCSF Medical Center, and Porto Franco Art Parlor locally, and recently at Chie Art Gallery in Milan, Italy. Her photographs were published online in The New Yorker Magazine, and Le Journal de la Photographie. Her work appeared in Photographer's Forum Best of Photography Annual and she was a winner of The APA Awards 2010 National Photo Competition.
