Description

The new Exploratorium opens to the public on April 17! Join us for Opening Day to experience over 600 exhibits, 150 of which are brand new, and special events lasting into the evening. Throughout the day, artists, special guests, volunteers, and Explainers will offer a variety of surprises and hands-on activities for people waiting in line. The doors officially open at 10:00 a.m. after a distinctly Exploratorium ribbon-cutting ceremony. After sundown, live performances, festivities, and awesome moments will continue until 10:00 p.m. Advance purchase timed-entry tickets are highly recommended; visit http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/tickets.

As part of its opening dedication the Exploratorium will ring a bronze bell created by artist Nick DiPhillipo and cast at The Crucible, a hands-on industrial arts organization in Oakland. Following the opening dedication, there will be free events open to the public, including hands-on activities and demonstrations with Exploratorium Explainers and Explorables volunteers; Rangoli, a traditional Indian welcoming design created over the course of several hours by artist Purvi Shah and volunteers from the India Community Center in Milpitas; a chance to share your favorite Exploratorium story as part of a live broadcast from KPOO; and spectacular architectural projections by internationally recognized creative technology innovators Obscura Digital, transforming the historic façade of Pier 15 in San Francisco into a spellbinding visual odyssey through micro and macro phenomena.

In the Outdoor Gallery, don’t miss This World Made It Self, a large-scale multimedia performance by artist and animator Miwa Matreyek, visible from some public areas. Visit http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/opening/april17 for more information.
