Description

Come learn about the science behind the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics! Dr. Jeff Silverman will discuss his research on supernovae, the colossal explosions of dying stars. Supernovae are so bright they can
briefly outshine a whole galaxy and be seen toward the edge of the
Universe. Observations of supernovae provided the first proof that the
expansion of the Universe is accelerating, likely due to a repulsive
and mysterious "dark energy".
The lecture will take place on the UC Berkeley campus in the Genetics and Plant Biology Building, Room 100.
