Description
About the ExhibitionThe Christian use of the speculum or mirror clearly promotes a saint's image as a model for imitation. To effect such spiritual transformation, the Antwerp Wierix family of engravers -- Hieronymus, Anton and Jan -- was engaged to produce vivid religious images for the Jesuits. The modern prints and their sixteenth-century plates included in the exhibition offer readers insightful takes on Christ (precocious child and industrious adult), battling angels, stoic martyrs and noble founders of religious orders. The exalted role of the virgin is evident, particularly in devotional material centered on the Blessed Virgin Mary and the practice of the rosary. Such images and their implied uses influenced not only Jesuit seminarians but also the devout Catholic laity of Europe. Besides stimulating the imagination of later artists like Rembrandt, comparable images were sent as didactic and meditation aids to Jesuit missions throughout the world. The De Krijtberg treasure trove is on extended loan from the Dutch Jesuit Province to the Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen, which has graciously offered the devotional images for tour.
