Description

"Regarding the sculpture...really, it is just that. It is made of wood. It is large and imposing. It will be somewhat in the way. It will be half price...I've made a beautiful bargain bin..."
- Joshua Pieper

What would Alfred Taubman, billionaire retailing pioneer, say about the contemporary art gallery experience? What would he say about threshold resistance and the austere white cube, the gallerinas, and the 'curious economics of contemporary art?' Take it one step further at PING PONG GALLERY, what would he say about Joshua Pieper’s exhibition EVERYTHING MUST GO? What would he say about art in a “Bargain Bin?” And art “Half Price?” And a sign indicating “This Area Closed Off?”

Threshold resistance, the evocative expression and life’s work of Alfred Taubman, is about "understanding and defeating the force, the physical and psychological barriers between art and commerce, between shoppers and merchandise, between high culture and popular taste." While Pieper may not be familiar with Taubman or his philosophy on the palace of commerce, Pieper’s exhibition is a uniquely humorous and witty exploration of the very nature of this commerce.

Subtle and wry, the show juxtaposes drawings with found objects. 'Ideas are exchanged as commodities, and refer to themselves in a simple, matter of fact language.' Joshua Pieper does not attempt to break down the threshold resistance; rather, through his deliberate works on paper, and carefully considered sculptures, Pieper places commerce at the very center of his exhibition EVERYTHING MUST GO. Pieper makes physical the very psychological force that exists between art and commerce. And viewers must necessarily question and consider their relationship to the work, the space and what things mean at face value and beyond.

Joshua Pieper received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2005. His work has been exhibited at Rosamund Felsen Gallery in Los Angeles and Ping Pong Gallery, Blank Space, the San Francisco Arts Commission, New Langton Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in the Bay Area.
