Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon 2012

The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon is one of the world's signature sporting events. On June 10th, 2000 of the world's best triathletes will assemble in San Francisco to attempt the impossible - to Escape From Alcatraz! They will swim 1.5 miles from Alcatraz Island through the frigid waters of San Francisco bay, come to shore and jump on bikes for a grueling 18-mile bike race, and finally embark on an 8-mile run through the rugged trails of the Golden Gate Recreation Area.

Volunteers are critical to the event's success and opportunities are available both for race preparation (June 7 and June 9) and on Race Day itself, June 10. Volunteers serve as the event's pit crew, providing essential support to the 2000 athletes attending from around the globe. The event, seen worldwide on television, demonstrates the virtues of athleticism, fitness, determination and promotes the beauty and extraordinary character of our City by the Bay.

Volunteers will support the event by manning aid stations, supporting athletes as they transition from swimming to biking to running, assisting with digital timing, tracking devices and computer communications. They will man the finish line and award medals, provide food service and hospitality and serve as course marshals throughout the race route to ensure safety for both athletes and spectators. Volunteers will be front and center -- very much a part of every aspect of the event!

All volunteers will receive Escape From Alcatraz T-shirts, as well as a shift meal and water. Volunteer shifts range from 4 to 8 hours and are well suited to both individuals and groups. This is a great 'team' volunteer activity and we encourage clubs, service organizations and corporate teams to participate.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and minors will require adult supervision. Athletes who volunteer will have extra chances to secure a position in next year's race if they are interested.
