Description

Oakland-based artist Alicia McCarthy’s work emerged out of the punk street culture and folk ethos of the mid-1990s Mission District. She continues to incorporate found materials and floating snippets of text—“the real you,” “the way in is the way out,” “o’amor”—into her collaged and abstract paintings on paper and found wood. Her work then and now emphasizes the artist’s hand and a paradoxical pairing of formal skill and crude immediacy.

McCarthy will discuss her recent work as well as her early career and friendship with Ruby Neri and other Mission School artists.

Alicia McCarthy’s lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition ENERGY THAT IS ALL AROUND, Mission School: Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, Ruby Neri in the Walter and McBean Galleries at SFAI, September 12–December 14.
