Description
Academy Award-winning filmmakers Allie Light and Irving Saraf will present and discuss their latest documentary, recently showcased at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Empress Hotel is a facility in the Tenderloin established by the San Francisco Department of Public Health to house the recently homeless, and its tenants come from diverse backgrounds. Many are sufferers of mental illness or addiction who have lived on the streets, and while some are vulnerable or irascible, and not every person can stay on meds or get clean, a kind of community is shaped out of chaos and hopelessness. Filmmakers Light and Saraf follow the hotel's general manager Roberta Goodman, as she makes efforts to improve the residents' lives, and they also introduce us to several of the residents themselves. Empress Hotel is an observant and compassionate film, one that eloquently puts a human face on homelessness and offers to show us something about ourselves.
