"Words Once Spoken"by Emily Jan
Opening Reception: July 8th, 6-8pm
Paxton Gate's Curiosities for Kids
766 Valencia St, San Francisco
Show runs July 1st - August 17th
Drawing upon years of travel and exposure to the living myth and mythology of her adopted homelands of South Africa and southern Mexico, she creates eerie animal forms which are not quite alive but not quite dead either.
In the company of Paxton Gate’s usual residents – the traditionally taxidermy animal mounts down the street in the original 824 Valencia location – Jan’s creatures are ghostly presences which seem to emerge from the walls rather than hang upon them. Made of organic materials – caning reed and hog intestine, otherwise known as sausage casings – Jan’s sculptures refer to the grotesque intersection between humanity and the natural world.
