Host: A.C. Johner
Join A.C. Johner, director of Electronic Awakening, and Graham St. John, author of Global Tribe: Technology, Spirituality and Psytrance, for this exclusive session on how the idea of rapid transmutation, consciousness shift, robot apocalypse, and “Singularity” filter through the global electronic dance music community.
Guest: Grahm St. John
Dr Graham St John is an Australian anthropologist of transformative festivals, techno-tribes, ritual, and weird religion. He has held research posts in four countries including Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Queensland's Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies and the School for Advanced Research on the Human Experience, Santa Fe, New Mexico. His most recent book is Global Tribe: Technology, Spirituality and Psytrance (forthcoming with Equinox in Oct 2012) which is described by Eric Davis as "the definitive book on what has become, from the perspective of planetary spiritual culture, the most resonant music scene of our transhuman century." He is Executive Editor of Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture. Website: http://www.edgecentral.net

Over the last decades, the fascination with the end of the Mayan “Long Count” Calendar on December 21, 2012 has turned into a global phenomenon. One culture that has enthusiastically embraced ideas of an imminent transformation and fulfillment of ancient prophecy is the global electronic dance music community. The “techno tribal” archaic revival has become part of the cultural ethos of genres such as psychedelic trance, glitch hop, and break beat. A.C. Johner, director of Electronic Awakening, will explore with Graham St. John, author of Global Tribe: Technology, Spirituality and Psytrance, how the idea of rapid transmutation, consciousness shift, robot apocalypse, and “Singularity” filter through the global electronic dance music community. Is the electronic music culture processing viscerally, through beat and rhythm, something that is actually happening to us as a species? How can we understand this process, what it means for us now and what it may tell us about our shared future?
