Description
The first night's candle-lighting will be a special Tribute to Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, Chabad rabbi and his wife, who were victims of the recent massacre in Mumbai, India. The Bill Graham Menorah, constructed in 1975, is one of San Francisco's proudest traditions: the first outdoor, public menorah lighting outside of Israel. Rabbi Yosef Langer is joined by local dignitaries and officials in welcoming the community to Chanukah time!
In these times of terror and darkness it is especially appropriate for us to celebrate the Festival of Lights. It is time to bring the light into the streets to spread love and peace not only to all Jews but to all members of our community. Chanukah celebrates a great victory over oppression and, in celebrating together, we may, in our time, triumph together over terrorism and hatred.
In 1993, Mayor Frank Jordan declared that the first Sunday of Chanukah would forever be Bill Graham Menorah Day in honor of Bill Graham, rock and roll impresario and community leader, who survived the Holocaust to bring people together in celebration and joy for many years until his death in a helicopter in 1991. Let us come together on Bill Graham Menorah Day to honor this great man, to celebrate community, to spread the light!
This year Chanukah starts on Sunday, Decmeber 21, 2008. Joining us as we light the Menorah is an important demonstration of unity of people of people from all backgrounds, Jews and Non-Jews.
The week's schedule of candle-lighting is as follows:
