Description
With a career spanning four decades, Earth, Wind & Fire has proven their place in music history. "Boogie Wonderland" and "September" were their most popular songs from the disco era. They even pulled off a hit in the Bee Gee's bomb Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with their version of "Got to Get You into My Life." But what made their mix of funk, soul, pop and jazz indelibly cool was their soundtrack for blaxploitation godfather Melvin Van Peebles' 1971 classic Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. Formed by brothers Maurice and Verdine White, who still lead it today, the dozen-piece band was still unknown and (according to legend) living in a single apartment when Van Peebles ushered in the modern soundtrack era by releasing it before the film as a way to create some buzz. It worked, and almost 40 years later, the group is a legend. - Beau Dowling sanjose.com
