Description

Earplay opens its 25th season on Monday with a season of innovation from composers with strong ties to the Bay Area. Earplay concerts feature the Earplayers, a group of seven artists who, as a group, have developed a lyrical and ferocious style. With works written between 2003 and 2009 and referenced against 20th century modernist Seymour Shifrin’s short The Modern Temper scored for piano 4-hands the season promises surprises. Bruce Bennett’s explosive septet From the Ashes (commissioned by Earplay in 2005) showcases the full Earplay ensemble with percussion. Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez’s colorful and humorous and of course Henry the Horse (2006) unusually scored for piano 4-hands (Karen Rosenak and Michael Seth Orland), clarinet (Peter Josheff) and violin (Terrie Baune) contrasts with Kaija Saariaho’s sensual yet rhythmic Je sens un deuxième coeur for viola (Ellen Ruth Rose), cello (Thalia Moore) and piano (Michael Seth Orland). Sam Nichols commissioned new work, Unnamed, Jr. for clarinet (Peter Josheff), viola (Ellen Ruth Rose) and piano (Karen Rosenak) continues the thread of three works for three instruments in this concert. Join us for an evening of innovation!

Founded in 1985 by a consortium of composers and musicians, Earplay is dedicated to the performance of new chamber music offering audiences a unique opportunity to hear eloquent, vivid performances of some of today's finest chamber music. Mary Chun conducts the Earplayers, a group of six outstanding Bay Area musicians: Tod Brody, flute and piccolo; Peter Josheff, clarinet and bass clarinet; Terrie Baune, violin; Ellen Ruth Rose, viola; Thalia Moore, cello, and Karen Rosenak, piano. Guest artists in February are Michael Seth Orland, piano and Chris Froh, percussion.
