Description
This Thursday, February 25, 2010, a group of local SJSU students will be hosting a benefit event titled, ‘Dream Big-Haiti’ at South First Billiards in downtown San Jose. The event is a fundraiser for Haiti, to further assist with the international efforts of relief and recovery of the recent earthquake. The event will showcase artists of a wide array of genres, which include Reggae, Lite Rock, Hip-Hop, and Spoken Word. But what really makes this event unique are the invited guests who will be speaking at the engagement, which include members of the Haitian American Community Church (HACC) of San Jose, who will be sharing how the recent disaster has effected them and the Haitian Community in the Bay Area.
Another special guest is local hero, Rena Salomon of Campbell, the acclaimed ‘Angel in a Hummer’, who received the name and reputation from her relief work in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and who was recently featured on NBC Bay Area for her work in Haiti, spending $20,000 of her own money to build an orphanage for displaced children in the Port-Au-Prince area. She had recently established her own not-for-profit business, titled Humanitarian Emergency Aid Response Team (HEART) to help provide for the thousands of orphaned and vulnerable children on the island. Ms. Salomon will be sharing her experience in Haiti and how folks can get involved with her organization, as she will be announcing that she is coordinating a trip to travel back out to Haiti, inviting anyone who would be interesting in doing service.
The Dream Big Team is asking for a $5 suggested donation to attend a night of entertainment and community dialogue, and all proceeds will go to help fund Ms. Salomon’s HEART foundation. For making a donation, those who attend will also be able to receive a free hour of pool for the next time they visit the South First Street Billiards.
