Description

DIZZY BALLOON

Oakland natives Dizzy Balloon are a high school band success story. The five childhood friends started playing together at Piedmont Middle School in the early 2000s as Panda, but later changed their name when they realized a band named Panda already existed. Like other adolescent Bay Area bands, much of their early career was spent playing shows at Bottom of the Hill, which they sold out as high school juniors. They've since graduated to the likes of Slim's and the Great American Music Hall, and in 2008 won Live 105's local band competition, earning a spot at Not So Silent Night opening for Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers, Block Party, and Franz Ferdinand. Their self-titled debut album is a collection of nerdy, happy pop tracks a little reminiscent of early Phoenix songs. All five guys sing today, but lead singer Petros A.P. was the first to overcome puberty-induced self-consciousness and take the mic back in 2003, when the boys were in eighth grade. Why? According to an interview with the SF Chronicle, a cute classmate convinced Petros that ladies dig singers.
