Description

a.Muse presents Ditched, a photo exhibit by local artist Hap Leonard. There will be a public reception with the artists on Thursday, Dec. 13th from 6:30–9 pm. Admission is free.

With tongue in cheek and a playful eye on the urban landscape Ditched colorfully captures abandoned couches which have found their way to San Francisco streets and allies. The artist felt these “formerly intimate objects” needed recognition and worked to capture their “personality” and unknown “history.”

Leonard’s inspiration for the project came several years ago when he saw an abandoned couch in Dolores Park and captured the image with his phone. His attention was drawn to more and more “previously invisible” couches strewn about the city, “each with their own story, each with only hours left before the city trucks were to come and turn them into matchsticks.”

Also on display during this exhibit, the multi-media artwork of Silvia Piloto, who helped curate Leonard’s work. Poloto, a native of Brazil, is known for her vibrant visual vocabulary. She works in a variety of media, including photography, sculpture, painting and video, has a wide body of art which exploits the same playful juxtapositions and visual puns showcased in Leonard’s photography.
