The production will enchant all audiences as it tells this “tale as old as time”. It features the Academy Award-winning songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, plus new songs with Alan Menken and Tim Rice. The production was originally directed by Robert Jess Roth and originally produced by Disney Theatrical Productions and based upon the book by Linda Woolverton. Beauty and the Beast will be performed by the Carlmont Performing Arts Department from March 4 - 7 in the beautiful, new Carlmont High School Performing Arts Center at 1400 Alameda de las Pulgas in Belmont.Based on Disney’s Academy Award winning animated film, the stage version of Beauty and the Beast tells the story of the winsome Belle and her ferocious captor. The 1991 Disney movie became the first animated film nominated for Best Picture. In New York, the Broadway production played to over 5,000 sold-out houses and went on to become the sixth longest running Broadway musical of all time. Filled with lovable characters, beautiful tunes and enchanting sets and costumes, this “tale as old as time” is sure to be another Carlmont High School hit.
“The magic of this musical is that it helps us be part of a journey where true inner beauty and love can conquer all obstacles,” explains Bernadette Fife, Director. “It’s a traditional love story with nontraditional characters and some of the most memorable songs to come out of Broadway in decades.”
The production’s cast members add up to a talented group of students from Carlmont High School. In addition to the directing talents of Bernadette Fife, we are thrilled to have Ame Secrist as Choreographer, Genevieve Tep as Vocal Director and John DaBaldo as Music Director and Conductor.
The set will reflect the cozy village, castle and enchanting forest. Several surprises will be revealed to entertain and fascinate the audience. The costumes are magical and depict the light-hearted feel of the period while accenting each actor’s personality.
Carlmont High School, in a desire to make the play even more accessible to families in our community, is pleased to offer a discounted Student and Senior price. According to Bernadette Fife, “This is just one of the ways that we can help ensure that terribly important plays like this one are accessible to more families throughout the area.”
