Description
Digable Planets always had a laid-back strut to their jazz-infused sound. The trio’s records were stern yet soft-spoken, coming at a time when radio celebrated thoughtful hip-hop. The Billboard-charter, “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” (instant nostalgia for people in their mid-twenties or older) won them a Grammy in early ‘90s. Their debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) went gold and was quickly embraced by hip-hop heads, random fans, and critics alike. They thrived in an era when hip-hop was obsessed with jazz, sampling bass licks and horn stabs to no end (see:“Where I’m From” and “Jimmi Diggin Cats”). And while their sound is dated to some, their songs still outsmart most rap out nowadays.
