Description

Desco in Old Oakland will, on Tuesday, January 14, offer a la carte dinner menu specials prepared by Chef Donato Scotti using recipes by Rosetta Costantino that are found in her two acclaimed cookbooks, MY CALABRIA: Rustic Family Cooking from Italy’s Undiscovered South and her recently published SOUTHERN ITALIAN DESSERTS: Rediscovering the Sweet Traditions of Calabria, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, and Sicily. Both books will be available for purchase that evening.

Main course dishes will include Pesce Spada Alla Ghiotta, swordfish “glutton’s style” with tomato, capers and olives, and cauliflower salad; Vrasciole Alla Verbicarese, stuffed pork rolls in tomato sauce Verbicaro style, and potatoes layered with artichokes; and Tiella D’agnello, baked lamb shoulder chops with artichokes, peas and breadcrumbs.

A popular Bay Area cooking teacher and author, Rosetta Costantino moved to California with her parents when she was 14. Her family kept their Calabrian traditions both in their garden and kitchen. After a successful Silicon Valley career, for the last several years Costantino, through her classes, culinary tours, and books, has shared her family’s stories, traditions and recipes.

Desco's hallmark is its seasonally fresh, ingredient-driven regional Italian cuisine. Not to be missed is the traditional Neapolitan pizze and the schiacciatte prepared in a wood-fired oven. The wine list at Desco is comprised entirely of Italian varietals, with 50 selections, about 20 of which are poured by the glass. The full bar showcases classic cocktails, amaro and traditional Italian aperitivi and digestivi. There is an afternoon happy hour with Italian bar snacks.

The comfortable, old-world feel of the 50-seat dining room at Desco evokes a 1940s Italian caffé thanks, in part, to rustic wooden furnishings and a vintage brick wall. There is outdoor sidewalk seating for up to 16, weather permitting, plus a copper-topped counter with room for 10 more guests. The building housing Desco is an historic structure erected in 1876 and a portion of the restaurant's mosaic and tile flooring has been in place for the better part of a century.

Prior to Desco, Chef Scotti opened Donato Enoteca in Redwood City, California, in 2009. He grew up in the small town of Bergamo in Italy and studied at the Instituto Alberghiero di San Pellegrino culinary school. He then moved to the United States and held positions of increasing responsibility at such restaurants as the legendary Valentino in Los Angeles and Il Fornaio in Sacramento. In 2004, Scotti designed and opened La Strada in Palo Alto, then Donato Enoteca, and subsequently Desco in the summer of 2013.

Desco is located at 499 9th Street, on the corner of Washington Street in Oakland, California.
