Description
Dennis Parlante & Matt Gonzalez will discuss the practice, theory, concept, history, and materials of collage in a casual conversation.Dennis Parlante creates mixed media collages using vintage papers, documents, postal envelopes, tags, ephemera of all kinds and combines them with abstract marks, shapes, and lines of acrylic paint. In using these materials he tries to go beyond the nostalgia of the old papers without sacrificing their unique power. He finds the shapes, marks, and lines of these ephemera to be spontaneous and creative monuments for lives past. By combining these found papers with his own painted and drawn lines, shapes and markings, he tries to link properties of old and new, spontaneous and deliberate, into works that are both cohesive and lyrical.
Matt Gonzalez was born in McAllen, Texas and received his BA from Columbia University in New York City. He has been exhibiting found paper and wood collage since 2006. He has previously taught "Art & Politics" at SFAI, and he has written numerous articles about art including articles about Kurt Schwitters, Gustavo Ramos Rivera, William Theophilus Brown, Tom Schultz, Guy Colwell, Keeghan McHargue, and Andrew Schoultz, among others.
Gonzalez's review of Christa Assad's ceramics show in Seattle at Friesen Abmeyer is forthcoming form Ceramics: Art and Perception (quarterly).
Gonzalez is a former politician who served a term on the Board of Supervisors and served as Ralph Nader's vice-presidential running mate in 2008. He currently works as an attorney in the San Francisco Public Defender's Office.
