The Luna Ensemble presents: DECODING PHONOGRAPHY

https://www.facebook.com/events/566163530159987/

A new music project premiering six pieces by composers Jennifer Wilsey, Rachel Condry, Daniel Steffey, Crystal Pascucci, Sam Withrow and Christopher Luna-Maga/Diego Villaseñor. Inspired by the Luna Ensemble’s mission, the composers were commissioned to translate field recordings from three Bay Area landmarks: The Port of Oakland; Embarcadero-West Oakland BART; Redwood Regional Park, into captivating notated music for the ensemble.

Decoding Phonography is grounded in the idea that any sonic encounters in the environment holds a musical idea in itself. The sounds we encounter in everyday life, noise of nature, thrashes of cities, predators and preys, industrial machines, and the sounds of speech, may occur without a musical purpose but holds rich sonic elements, thus The Luna Ensemble and the commissioned composers regard them as prime material for making music. The pitches, rhythms, dynamics, density, timbres and other musical characteristics of such sounds are a starting point for compositional development and instrumentation.

The Luna Ensemble is an electroacoustic ensemble consisting of seven members dedicated to the creation and performance of contemporary music that translates everyday environmental-sounds into music through experimental notation, extended instrumental techniques, improvisational strategy, and electronically manipulated field recordings. Their music exists at an intersection of musique concrète, spectralism, improvisation and American experimentalism.
