Description

Gallery Three is pleased to present Epic Battles (On the Mountain at Dawn), the first West Coast solo exhibition of new work by David Cook. For this exhibition, Cook has built an elaborately themed body of work around a tale of love, hate, sex, and death between a high priestess, a two-headed king, and their respective armies of fantastical creatures. The artist's imagery employs a mythological language inspired by such subversive influences as heavy metal music and a personal friendship with a dominatrix whose domme persona, "Teresa Nasty", is rendered two-dimensionally as the main character in the Epic Battles narrative.

In the artist's words: "It's all about the tension and control she lords over everyone around her, and the confusion she creates. What is love to her? Why is everyone so eager to please her and, at the same time, attempting to destroy her?" These questions will be played out across the 30-35 mixed media pieces Cook has created for Epic Battles, melding illustration, stenciling, and paper cutting techniques.

The opening reception for Epic Battles (On the Mountain at Dawn) will be held at Gallery Three on Saturday, August 14th, 2010 from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be on display through September 4th, 2010 and is free and open to the public.

David Cook is a self-taught artist born and raised in Louisville, KY and currently working in Brooklyn, New York. His most recent artistic development is the integration of color into his work - especially significant as the artist is color blind.
