Description
Daniel Beaty has already won an Obie for his one-man show Emergency!, which bodes well for this weekend run sponsored by Tabia African American Theatre Ensemble. The play begins with a stark and compelling idea: in modern-day New York, a slave ship suddenly appears rounding that symbol of freedom the Stature of Liberty and calling its message into question. The confusion, consternation and uproar that inevitably follow this reminder of a past that people wish would just stay buried are teased out with the full force of a poetry slam by Beaty, who plays some two score characters. There will be a reception and audience participation event after Friday’s show. (MSG)
