Description

Cuba advances inevitably towards the threshold of significant change, and at the same time stands upon the platform of a vibrant tradition of photographic iconography that is in some ways integral to Cuba's perception of its own contemporary history.

Fine art photographer Charles Anselmo will discuss the social context of photography in Cuba today, suggesting that there have been three distinct sociopolitical generations of Cuban photographic artists since the revolution.
Also referencing the role of photographers beyond the island, he will address the unique relevance of images captured by American visitors who have engaged the many identities of Cuban culture for the first time.

Over the course of twelve years Anselmo has returned to Cuba nearly thirty times. On display in the gallery is Cuba In Transition, an exhibition of photographs by participants in his Havana workshops from the past two years. Cuba's resilient, photogenic people, famous hybridized old American cars and stunning colonial-period architectural forms are here depicted with resonant beauty and sensibility across a myriad variety of visual themes.
