Description

Featuring Haleh Abghari (voice), Laurie San Martin
(composer), Chris Froh (percussion); with Dana Harel
(set design)
Former Montalvo Artists‐in‐Residence Laurie San
Martin and Haleh Abghari, with percussionist Chris
Froh, present their new performance piece inspired
by Farid al‐Din Attar’s 12th century poem, The
Conference of the Birds. The poem, a classic of Persian Sufi writing, is an allegory of the soul’s
search for the divine, told through the contrivance of a flock of birds seeking a king. San Martin’s
and Abghari’s adaptation borrows elements from Attar’s text and weaves them together with
other traditional poems and fables to create a piece rich in satire and drama. Taking inspiration
from the customs of Korean pansori and Iranian traditional music, they have created their own
unique form for storytelling combining voice, percussion, computer‐processed sounds, Western
classical music, and birdsong all placed against media‐based sets designed by visual artist Dana
Harel, also a former Montalvo Artist‐in‐Residence.
