"Common (originally Common Sense) was a highly influential figure in rap's underground during the '90s, keeping the sophisticated lyrical technique and flowing syncopations of jazz-rap alive in an era when commercial gangsta rap was threatening to obliterate everything in its path. His literate, intelligent, nimbly performed rhymes and political consciousness certainly didn't fit the fashions of the moment, but he was able to win a devoted cult audience. By the late '90s, a substantial underground movement had set about reviving the bohemian sensibility of alternative rap, and Common finally started to receive wider recognition as a creative force. N.E.R.D. is an alternative rock band formed in 2001. Their music is best described as funk rock, with various other influences, including hip-hop, soul, alternative rock, and blues rock. Band member Pharrell WIlliams explains: 'N.E.R.D. stands for No-one Ever Really Dies. The Neptunes are who we are and N.E.R.D. is what we do. It's our life. N.E.R.D. is a basic belief. People's energies are made of their souls. When you die, that energy may disperse but it isn't destroyed.'" The band's third album, Seeing Sounds, was released in June of 2008.
