Closing Party for Meridian Gallery’s The Painted Word

Thought you missed The Painted Word exhibition at Meridian Gallery? The exhibition—which features over 80 works of art by renowned writers and poets of the San Francisco Renaissance and Beat generation—has been extended until July 14th. What distinguishes this exhibition, says Executive Director Anne Brodzky, “is that it shows the culmination of different modes of visual art and writing from San Francisco Renaissance and Beat poets, which has never been done before in a major art exhibition.”

Jack Hirschman, the hugely prolific painter and poet of Red Poet fame, will be the special guest for the closing party for The Painted Word on July 13th from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. He has written more than 50 volumes of poetry and essays and will read a recent work. In 2006, Hirschman was appointed Poet Laureate of San Francisco. He was instrumental in developing San Francisco’s International Poetry Festival. Hirschman is active with the Revolutionary Poets Brigade and curates the Poets 11 Anthology, which collects poetry from each of the City’s eleven districts.

The event will also feature a deeply reflective reading by the award-winning actress and recognized stage director Lissa Tyler Renaud of poems by Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, William Saroyan, and William Burroughs. Renaud has taught acting, art theory, and voice throughout the United States as well as at major theatre institutions in Asia, Mexico, and Russia. A recipient of Ford Foundation and National Science Foundation grants for her teaching, Renaud also publishes and lectures widely, particularly on the European avant-garde and Kandinsky.

In addition, Meridian Gallery will screen two documentaries––San Francisco’s Wild History Groove and Venice West and the LA Scene––by filmmaker Mary Kerr, which chronicles the extraordinary flourishing of avant-garde art and poetry during the Beat generation in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Her documentaries have been widely screened in the United States as well as internationally in Austria, Norway, Sweden, and France.

(Wine will be provided by Wine Sisterhood. Suggested donation for the event: $12. All proceeds benefit Meridian Gallery and its youth program. No one turned away for lack of funds.)
