Description

The Center for Literary Arts will present Rita Bullwinkel, author of Belly Up, on Thursday, October 10, 2019 in MLK Library Room 225/229 at 7PM. The reading will be followed by an on-stage interview with Steinbeck Fellow, Katie M. Flynn, plus an audience Q&A, book sale and signing. This event is free and open to the public.

Belly Up is a story collection that contains ghosts, mediums, a lover obsessed with the sound of harps tuning, teenage girls who believe they are actually plants, gulag prisoners who outsmart a terrible warden, and carnivorous churches. Throughout these grotesque and tender stories, characters question the bodies they've been given and what their bodies require to be sustained. Belly Up won the 2018 Believer Book Award and is currently being translated into Italian and Greek. The New York Times writes: “In Bullwinkel’s creepy, deadpan debut, bodies become objects, objects become bodies, and bodies and objects fuse and part in fascinating, unsettling ways.”

Rita Bullwinkel’s writing has been published in Tin House, Conjunctions, BOMB, Vice, NOON, and Guernica. She is a recipient of grants and fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, Brown University, Vanderbilt University, Hawthornden Castle, and The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation. Both her fiction and translation have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes. She lives in San Francisco.

Katie M. Flynn is a 2018-2019 Steinbeck Fellow. Her stories have appeared or are forthcoming in Colorado Review, Indiana Review, Joyland Magazine, Juked, Ninth Letter, Witness Magazine, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of Colorado Review’s Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction and a fellowship from the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto and serves as fiction editor at Split Lip Magazine.
