Description

"Circuiting"
Justin Margitich

February 21-March 15, 2014
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, February 21, 7-11pm

City Limits is pleased to present Circuiting, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Justin Margitich. The works, on black sandpaper and wood panel, are the first paintings by the artist after several years of working exclusively in large scale graphite and metal point drawings. Noticing the liminal forms created by sharpening his metalpoint stylus on fine sandpaper, Margitich began using his own incidental marks as beginnings of compositions, painting striations of color on what was previously scrap material. Influenced as much by Frank Stella's early "black paintings" as the subtle gradients of Andreas Schultze, the works in Circuiting are an exercise in precision and repetition, finding new value in various kinds of mark making and leaving little to be discarded.

Justin Margitich is a Bay Area artist interested in using repetition of forms as a system of language. Many of his works include complex two-dimensional shapes arranged into perspectival landscapes. He received his BFA from California College of the Arts in 2008 and his MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2013. His work has been exhibited at various galleries in the Bay Area and at Moskowitz Gallery in Los Angeles.
