Mozart: Flute Quartet in D Major, K. 285
Mozart: Quintet for Piano and Winds, K. 452
Shostakovich: Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67
The opening chamber concert of our season offers a night of musical contrasts.
The two Mozart pieces offer quite different instrumentation. The flute quartet is scored for flute, violin, viola and cello, the first of three quartets for the amateur Ferdinand De Jean. The Quintet is scored for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon; Shortly after the premiere, Mozart wrote to his father that he considered it to be the best thing he ever wrote.
Included in our musical journey are works by Barber for soprano and piano and a Canzone for flute and piano. The evening rounds out with the final of Shostakovich’s two piano trios, written in 1944 which famously opens with one of the most difficult passages for cello in chamber literature. It contains a wide variety of moods, including a frenzied dance, morose largo and an allegretto that includes a Jewish melody also used in his 8th quartet.
