Celebrate Saratoga-- A Village Block Party

Description

A grape stomp challenge and competition, three stages of live entertainment or 20 plus bands and dancers, the best wine in the area, gourmet food, family activities and more are just a few of the activities planned for Celebrate Saratoga—A Block Party. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce the event will take place on Big Basin Way on Sunday, September 16 from 12-7 PM.

Big Basin Way will be closed to traffic starting at Sixth Street through to Blaney Plaza to make room for all the activities. Free parking will be at West Valley College with shuttle buses available to take people to the event.

The Saratoga History Museum at 20450 Saratoga-Los Gatos Road will also have activities from 12-4 PM including a free treasure hunt, old fashioned children’s games, classical music quartet, reader’s theatre play on Senator Phelan and his home Montalvo and poetry readings by Poet Laureates Parthenia Hicks, Dave Denny, and Sally Ashton as well as poets Erica Goss and Mary Lou Taylor.

First Time—Grape Stomp
The First Annual Cinnabar Winery Grape Stomp Challenge and sponsored by the Cinnabar Winery will run from 1 to 4 PM. Competition is expected to be fierce with teams from the wineries, Village merchants, realtors, local organizations and more competing for a trophy. Three barrels will be available with one dedicated for the general public and two for the team competitions.

Local Wine and Great Food
Local wineries will be pouring their very best wines. Participating wineries include Big Basin Vineyards, Cinnabar Winery, Cooper-Garrod Estate Winery, The House Family Winery, Katherine Kennedy Winery, Savannah-Chanelle Winery, Martella Winery, and Mountain Winery. Michelin star restaurant The Plumed Horse will provide Plumed Horse wine. Artisan beer, soft drinks and bottled water will also be available.

Tasty food from many participating local restaurants will include Casa de Cobre and Rose Market. A tempting food court representing a wide range of ethnic food as well as popular snacks include Big Ed's Buzzard BBQ, Treatbot ice cream, Polkadotz cupcakes, Hawaiian Poke Bowl, Quick Dog Catering, Viva Asian chicken salad, Pizza My Heart, Mynt Indian Restaurant, and Thai Stick BBQ.

Announcing the Citizen and Business Person of the Year
Chamber of Commerce President Debra Cummins will announce the Citizen of the Year and the Business Person of the Year in a ceremony at 1:15 PM on the Celebrate Stage near Third Street. Names for Citizen of the Year and Business Person of the Year were submitted by local citizens and voted on by a committee that included former winners. The much-anticipated event will also be celebrated at a dinner on a later date.

Action Days Kids Zone and Teen Scene
The Action Day Kids Zone will be hopping with six carnival activities, two jump houses, balloons, art projects, and other popular children’s activities. The Teen Scene, a separate area, will include DJ Scott Raine-King providing lively patter, karaoke music, face painting and several of the popular Saratoga Idol music and entertainment groups. The Saratoga High School’s Robotic Club award winning robot will also make an appearance.

Non-stop Entertainment
Three stages will provide a variety of nonstop entertainment including iconic rock and roll, blues, country, bossa nova, jazz and Hawaiian music, dancers, and martial arts demonstrations. Television personality and local Saratogan Thuy Vu will be Guest Mistress of Ceremonies on the Celebrate Stage. Also on stage and making announcements will be Mayor Chuck Page, Vice Mayor Jill Hunter and City Council members Manny Capello, Emily Lo and Howard Miller. The Celebrate Stage starts at noon and hosts the Rhythmaires, West Valley Dance Cats, David Johnson, the Houserockers, Nineteen (formerly the West Valley Jazz Orchestra). The Village Stage with Rhonda Boos as emcee starts at noon and is located near Fourth Street and Big Basin Way and hosts the Falcon Beat Band from Saratoga High School, San Jose Chinese Cultural Center Wushu Team in martial arts; Yoshiko Oda and Friends, West Valley Dance Cats, The Kirk Abe Trio, Saratoga High Indian Club Dancers, The Ones, Jun Lu Performing Arts Academy, the Victor Ohana Hawaiian Band and dancers, Rachel Lillian and the After Dark Orchestra. The Winery Stage with Chris Blake as Emcee and located near the Cinnabary Winery on Fifth Street starts at noon and hosts Levitate, Katy Boyd & Marty Atkinson, emith, Tsunami, and The Hitmen.

The day will close at 7:00 PM with the stirring sounds of the Stewart Tartan Pipe and Drums band marching in costume down Big Basin Way. Bring your camera!


Classic Cool Cars and More
Classic cool cars will line the street and add to the entertainment mix as people re-live childhood memories and talk to the car owners. Many non-profit organizations will have information tables. The San Jose Earthquakes will also have a table for distributing information.
