CAVE Women? Usually the only knuckle-draggers coming out of Sacramento are the politicians. Am I right? (Political joke! Hang on, The Daily Show is calling me.) Okay actually, the name is just a plain old acronym of the band members' names: Casey (vocals, stand-up bass, mbira), Alicyn (vocals, guitar), Vanessa (drums), and Emily (vocals, piano and accordion), plus late-joiner Kim Davis (flute). As one can tell from the instruments, the band's sound draws a variety of influences, from jazz to African to Brazilian pop. All five members of the quintet are classically trained and arrange some killer harmonies, reminiscent of the tight female vocals of Dirty Projectors, but with a more folksy, world beat vibe.
