About

California Modern Art Gallery is dedicated to the promulgation of California artists and artworks from the 1950's through the 1970's. The San Francisco Bay Area has had a particularly influential role in the development of Abstract Expressionism, the first truly "American" art movement. The driving force behind this influence was the California School of Fine Arts, now known as the Art Institute. During the 40's & 50's, under the tutelage of such fine painters as Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn & David Park; students were pushed to the limits of their creativity to create masterworks of their own.
