When it came time for a live engagement or studio date, legendary artists like Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, Errol Garner and Illinois Jacquet (who could have hand-picked any bassist in the business) made their first call to Charles Anthony “Buster” Williams. Besides sideman credits extending deep into jazz history, he has made numerous television appearances and earned countless accolades, including a 1979 Grammy award for “Best Jazz Instrumental Performance.” Renowned for his swing, precision and huge sound that’s always tuned in to the emotional undertones of a piece, he can be heard on hundreds of classic jazz recordings, including 10 dates as leader.
