Magic Theatre Kicks Off 47th Season With the Legacy Revival of Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning Buried Child

San Francisco, August 6, 2013 – Magic Theatre launches its 47th season by continuing its “Sheparding America” celebration with the legacy revival of Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic Buried Child, directed by Producing Artistic Director Loretta Greco. Buried Child runs September 11 – October 6.

“For almost two decades I’ve longed to work on Buried Child,” said Greco. “I believe that in 1,000 years philosophers and civilians alike who are searching for meaning will still be mining the depths of Sophocles’ Oedipus, Chekhov’s Three Sisters and Shepard’s Buried Child. So it is with great excitement that we begin our season with a revival of Sam’s timeless homegrown masterpiece.”

Yearning for the comfort of his idealized Midwestern roots, Vince returns to the family’s homestead to find a very different kind of inheritance — proving that there is, indeed, no place like home.

Hailed as “a play for the ages” by The New York Times, Buried Child received its world premiere at Magic Theatre in 1978 during Sam Shepard’s tenure as playwright-in-residence. Shepard’s residency spanned from 1975 to 1983, during which time he wrote and premiered some of his most seminal plays on Magic’s stage, including Buried Child, True West (1980), and Fool for Love (1983). Buried Child won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979, launching Sam Shepard into national attention as a playwright. Magic’s legacy revival of Buried Child features a version of the script that Sam Shepard reworked in 1996 for a Broadway revival of the play produced by Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Magic’s exceptional cast of seven is led by cherished Bay Area actor Rod Gnapp* (Se Llama Cristina, Annapurna) as Dodge, Patrick Alparone* as Vince, Patrick Kelly Jones* as Bradley and James Wagner* as Tilden, Denise Balthrop Cassidy* as Halie, Elaina Garrity as Shelly, and Lawrence Radecker as Father Dewis.

Buried Child will feature set design by Andrew Boyce, costume design by Alex Jaeger, lighting design by Eric Southern, and sound design by Jake Rodriguez.
