Description
Brescia is a city and commune in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy. It is situated at the foot of the Alps, a few kilometers from the lakes Garda and Iseo. With a population of 196,480, it is the second largest city in the region and the fourth of northwest Italy. The urban area of Brescia extends beyond the administrative city limits and has a population of 672,822, while over 1.5 million people live in its metropolitan area. The city is the administrative capital of the Province of Brescia, one of the largest in Italy, with over 1,200,000 inhabitants. For more information click here: http://www.annualcongress.com/italy/brescia-conferences
Brescia's core takes the form of a fascinating old town, which more than compensates for the city's rather ugly urban sprawl. The old town's narrow streets are home to some of the most important Roman ruins in Lombardy, and an extraordinary circular Romanesque church. First impressions of Brescia may be mixed - when we visited we were disconcerted to find that the usual vaguely dodgy loiterers who hang around near railway stations were augmented by several beggars, and the seediness seemed to spread a long way into the surrounding streets. Brescia has grown larger and more industrialised in recent decades, with a new commercial district outside the historic centre, called Brescia Due. However, along with business prosperity has come a wave of immigration and new social problems. It's important to remember that although the central historic area is fairly compact, this is a large modern city with all that that entails.
