Br'er Rabbit and Other Trickster Tales From Around the World

am, the spring 2012 season of Montalvo Arts
Center’s Family Performing Arts Series comes to a
close with a production of Br’er Rabbit and Other
Trickster Tales From Around the World, an
engaging, educational performance by the
renowned BOXTALES Theatre Company. Tickets
are available through the Montalvo Box Office.
The performance will present the staging of three folktales from different areas of the world,
centered on the archetype of “the trickster” or wily character who triumphs over oppression by
using his wits: “Br’er Rabbit” (Southern U.S.), “Tio Coñejo” (Mexico), and “How Kwaku Ananase
Gained a Kingdom of Knowledge from a Kernel of Corn” (Ghana, West Africa). Though they come
from varied cultural traditions, all three stories demonstrate to children the importance of selfreliance,
creative problem‐solving, and moral decision‐making. Directed by in a humorous,
energetic style by the BOXTALES company, the show features performers Matt Tavianini, Michael
Andrews, and Deven Sisler and beautiful masks by Ann Chevrefils and Lindsay Rust.
In addition to teaching children life lessons, the performance also addresses California Department
of Education content standards in English Language Arts; Word Analysis, Fluency, and Systematic
Vocabulary Development; Reading Comprehension; Literary Response and Analysis; and English
Language Development.
Founded in 1994, the stated mission of the BOXTALES Theatre Company is to fire imaginations,
inspire creativity, strengthen cultural pride, encourage tolerance, and engage young people in the
excitement and immediacy of live performance. The company was originally created by the Lobero
Theatre Foundation to develop a storytelling performance piece for the Santa Barbara school
system as part of the foundation’s Literary Arts Outreach Program. Their standout success paved
the way for the creation of additional original theater pieces, all drawing on world cultural
traditions, and all linked to a rigorous educational curriculum component. Today, BOXTALES is the
only professional touring theatre company in Santa Barbara as well as the only professional
theatre company creating original work.
