Description
The Tabard Theatre Company offers an evening of music, poetry and the spoken word as it presents BOURGEOIS BLACK: Juanita Harris in Concert on Friday, April 27, at 8pm at Theatre on San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose. The concert will feature Harris singing jazz, Broadway and opera, as well as bringing to life memorable stories. Joining Harris will be Sarah Zoobi on bass, Ruth Winter-Butterfield on keys, and Mason Razavi on guitar.Actress/singer/musician Juanita Harris is a Bay Area native. After studying vocal jazz and performance technique at De Anza College, she transferred to Humboldt State University, where she led the university's vocal jazz octet, Mad River Transit, for three years. While in the Arcata/Eureka area, Harris became a regular at Ferndale Repertory Theater, appearing in Working, Nunsense I & II, Jesus Christ Superstar, 1940s Radio Hour and Oil City Symphony. She then moved to Boston to study professional music with an emphasis in vocal studies at Berklee College of Music.
Back in the Bay Area, Harris has sung with San Jose-based The Choral Project (2005-08), continues to perform with The Jack Conway Trio, has started her own choir (The Joyful Noise Gospel Singers) and can be seen with big bands Tuesday Night Live and Nineteen Jazz Ensemble. Her local stage productions include Hairspray and Ragtime (Children's Musical Theatre of San Jose) and Crowns and Stompin' at the Savoy (The Tabard Theatre Company). For Foothill Theatre Company, she also appeared in The Crucible (as Tituba—her first nonmusical role) and All Shook Up.
"We are thrilled to offer this special one-night-only concert featuring the fabulous Juanita Harris," said Tabard's founder and executive director, Cathy Spielberger Cassetta. "She has performed many times for us, and we're always grateful whenever she can fit Tabard and Theatre on San Pedro Square into her busy professional life. It's going to be an exciting night of music to experience."
