Description
Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale will begin its 26th season with a performance of Carol Barnett's ground-breaking The World Beloved, A Bluegrass Mass, composed in 2006. The choral work, accompanied by bluegrass band, blends folk and classical in a thoroughly satisfying way. Innovative harmonies, words, rhythms, and instrumentation make this Mass unlike any other classical or bluegrass music you have ever heard. The Chorale will be joined by Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley and Bay Area bluegrass musicians.Cantabile Youth Singers will present a set of American folk songs arranged for children’s choir and blue grass band by two-time GRAMMY® Award winners, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer - a formidable duo of virtuoso players, composers and arrangers who have dedicated over 30 years to researching, recording and performing folk, country, and swing music. The set includes O Susanna, High on a Mountain, Bowling Green, Cuckoo, West Virginia and others.
Chorale and Cantabile will also perform several pieces that exemplify the American folk tradition, including two songs that were featured in the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou. Down in the River to Pray is a 19th century traditional Appalachian song whose origin still remains a mystery. Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby (The Siren's Song) is an old Mississippi tune, which was discovered by Alan Lomax, and made famous by the movie soundtrack recorded by Allison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, and Gillian Welch.
