The golden era of radio broadcasting filled homes with mysteries, comedies and variety shows in wondrous abundance, fueled by nothing more than voices, music and sound effects—no 3-D earpieces required. The California Pops Orchestra seeks to re-create some of that aural magic with its “Big Broadcast of 2010.” This live musical-variety show, with the help of the Black Tie Jazz Big Band, features plenty of big-band swing sounds that are based on original radio-orchestra arrangements. The afternoon will also feature impressionist Matt Helm doing his spot-on imitations of Dean Martin and others. The musical segments will be interluded with the adventures of Detective Jack Hammer, complete with on-the-fly sound effects. And did we mention the Zucchini Gulch Xylophone Trio recalling the glory days of novelty acts? (MSG)
