Description
In the last ten years there seems to have been an explosion of rendering done with a singular rudimentary material. Graphite. It could be that the proliferation of this type of work is a reaction to digital rendering, and the illustrative, iconic, and post graffiti Mission School work earlier in the decade. It may be a reaction to colorful geometric abstraction prevalent in work today. For some it is just the most direct route to a message unencumbered by color and texture. The lingering notion of graphite as a tool for sketching makes hard lines and graduated shadings linger between a directness of execution and a stealthy layering of intent. This is a show that uses Graphite for a final product. In October 2010 MacArthur b arthur will be host to a group show of Bay Area artists whose work uses graphite to tell a story, or make a place- physical or psychological. Co-Curated by Obi Kaufman and Kevin Clarke.
