Description

In Re-enchanter, Iraqi-born artist Bessma Kahlaf draws on the Chaldean tradition of witchcraft and truth telling to play the role of artist as re-enchanter of a dead, modernist world. With little more than an oversized hoodie and some everyday objects, Khalaf uses vaudevillian circus magic to transform from Gandolf the Magician to a lady in a burka then back to an Oakland homeboy, all while touring the inimitable California landscape on a Segway.

Bessma Khalaf was born in Iraq and emigrated to San Diego, California in 1990 just before the first Gulf War. She received her MFA from the California College of Art in 2007 and currently maintains a studio in Oakland. Khalaf is a recent recipient of Visions from the New California award.
