One-of-a-kind jewelry, paintings, photography, ceramics —you’ll find this variety and more to delight your art appetite at the Belmont Handcrafted Originals Art Fair, March 24-25, 2018. Unplug and enjoy a peaceful, leisurely stroll through the art-adorned sidewalks of charming Carlmont Village Shopping Center at this open-air boutique event. Celebrate spring weather and these 20 makers’ newest handcrafted creations and enjoy chatting with them about their showcased latest, original works.Mixed Media
Texture, dimension, and color are the basis for Karen Hale's original acrylic abstract artwork. The use of varying elements contributes to each of her contemporary abstract designs. Each canvas is bold but also brings in subtle nuances of color and meaning that takes the viewer into the painting where they can make new and unexpected insights. Karen’s mixed media paintings are non-representational, constructed of many layers and may include texture medium, glazes, washes, graphite pencil, found papers, pen and pastels. Whether you are renovating a space on your own or working with a designer, Karen is available to help with a selection from her collection of work or by creating a custom contemporary art piece for your home or office.
Wood and Fiber
Lanchi Vo grew up in Vietnam and was transplanted to Hawaiian soil for a few years before taking roots in San Jose. Growing up in the tropic, she was surrounded by wooden items as household commodities and developed a love for fine timbers at an early age. As a wood collector and wood turner, she takes pleasure in showcasing the incredible beauty found in the variety of timbers accumulated from around the world. Her turnings usually have simple profile and minimal decorative accents so they don’t distract from the wood's natural beauty. Instead, she hides the intricate details in the threaded caps to the boxes she creates, which add a significant level of complexity and an element of surprise to each piece. “I take the surprise a step further, disguising the box in natural forms: acorns, mushrooms, eggplants or small wooden pendants with a secret compartment,” says Lanchi. “The result is a whimsical, unique container for your precious items.” Recently, she has developed another line of containers with custom blends of natural and synthetic fibers.
Wood Outdoor Furniture
It is Steven Andersen’s goal to design and build all of his outdoor furniture to last for many seasons using only the best Western Red Cedar in all of his products. From the beginning, his furniture is designed taking into consideration function, style, ease of assembly, and strength with a goal of adding value to your life and home. The product line includes chairs, benches, planters, tables, dining tables and more. “At shows I'm most frequently asked if there is maintenance required on my furniture,” says Steven. “The two major benefits of applying a finish on your furniture are color retention and conditioning the wood, helping it to last many years. If left alone the wood will weather to a silvery grey. My motto is take care of your furniture and it will take care of you. I'm always available by phone to discuss any finishing question.”
Jewelry
Virginie “Vie” Blakey is a French, self-taught, visual artist and artisan jeweler. She grew up in the Lorraine region in the northeast part of France and now works from her home studio in Los Angeles. Unsatisfied with what she saw on the market, Vie decided to bring to life what appealed to her about the ancient jewelry she saw in museums. What started as creating unique designs for herself transformed through the public’s appreciation of her beautiful work culminating in the 2005 formation of her own handcrafted jewelry business. Inspired by mythology, ancient civilizations and the outdoors, Vie fabricates her own molds from sculptures, coins, cameos and other historical objects, hand carves her own stamps and then makes each piece individually. Every art piece has it’s own unique and authentic look and feel, recreating the much sought-after aesthetic of historic artifacts with a stroke of modern design.
The Belmont Handcrafted Originals Art Fair takes place Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Carlmont Village Shopping Center, located on Ralston Avenue at Alameda de las Pulgas. The event is sponsored by the Carlmont Village Merchant Association.
