Description

In conjunction with and as a component of the broader Awaiting Dawn interdisciplinary collaboration and creation underway at French American international School and directed by Moise Touré, the Beautiful Roots sculpture is intended to be used in a variety of conceptual and performative situations from an In Situ project to installations and will be documented through a series of portrait of each participant.

Beautiful Roots is a project of and about the creation of a collaborative fiber sculpture which is open to the entire French American International School community, from the students, parents, faculty, staff, to the larger public, and resides in the process of making of a flexible sculpture using a knitting loom with the input of a wide range of participants. Each individual will contribute by guiding the evolution of a small portion of the broader knitted sculpture, while artist, Latifa Medjdoub will be guiding with the technical issues and studying the overall progress of the sculpture under the influence of the multiple contributors.
Each contributing individual will have their portrait taken, and these documents will later be projected alongside of images showing the sculpture’s evolution, in parallel with the Wall of Reflection video showing a selection of FAIS student’s artworks. The sculpture will be displayed in the Arts Pavilion, during the performances of Awaiting Dawn, serving as a visual medium for exploring the psychic dimension of the theatrical performances associated with Awaiting Dawn.

Ultimately Beautiful Roots will be part of a series called Forest, a study evolving from performance to performance reflecting on our ability to adapt to physical and mental environments created by our global consciousness.

The making of the sculpture will take place throughout the month of February until March 14th at the Dennis Gallagher Arts Pavilion, Back entrance, 65 Lily St., San Francisco CA 94102, in the basement, Room 001, Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm.

Lifeworld’s Knowledge “can emerge only in the collective practice of creating an environment: level by level, step by step in the material and intellectual production, an environment in which the nonaggressive, erotic, receptive faculties of man, in harmony with the consciousness of freedom, strive for the pacification of the man and nature”.From Herbert Marcuse in An Essay on Liberation, 1969.
